Just watched Quantum of Solace for the first time. And wow, that was different. I'm...quite surprised how much I liked it, given that it's practically nothing like a traditional Bond movie.
Dominic - HAHAHAHA! Watching him trying to fight Bond was quite hilarious, though I'm still wincing at the axe-through-the-toes thing. Strange sort of Bond villian though.
Camille - really really surprised how much I liked her. Totally non-cliched and the scene in the burning room actually made me tear up.
M - I couldn't love her any more. Seriously.
James - goes without saying, he's the best thing ever. Is he the perfect man? Oh fuck yes.
As a movie, I don't know. If you took James out of it, it really could have just been any action movie. They made a conscious decision to remove all the things that would make this movie quintessentially Bond and while it's still a good movie...fuck it, it's not a Bond movie. Bits of it are but on the whole, no.
Having said that, I still pretty much loved it. And ohmyfuckingGod, I more than love Daniel Craig. Unf!
And that's all I have to say about that.

Date: 2009-03-24 11:32 pm (UTC)Re: Dominic...Yeah, the fight scene? Was a conscious descion by the actor - it was going to be a more traditional Bond vs villain fight, but then he said "you know, what if Domninic can't actually fight? He's just snapped". Which I actually like, really.
Re: Cam - *BEAMS* Excellent. So many reviewers really dislike her, it makes me sigh a lot. And, YES to the burning room scene. I've actually found (on a few reviewings thanks to a bootleg), that when she crawls back into the huddle, you can dimly hear screaming/crying/whimpering (I can't quite decide) in the background, as if that's what she's hearing. I'm both looking forward to threading that out, and really, really not.
(which I think sums up Roger and me re: Dom and Cam, really)
Re: M - so awesome.
Re: James - I adored him in this. So, so, so much. Everyone kept on going on about the new emotional Bond, and I'm like "I've seen this movie easily ten times, probably more, and uh....whut?" I thought he was wonderful.
And yes, you are right - not quite a Bond movie, but....eh.
In conclusion - SO GLAD YOU LIKED!

Date: 2009-03-25 12:04 am (UTC)...having said that, I was so full of squee about actually getting to see it that I forgot everything everyone had said about it already. So I went in with an open mind.
HA! That's so awesome that he played it that way. Though really, the axe is still making me cringe three hours later. Just no. My thoughts on Dominic are conflicted because while he has the ruthlessness of a Bond villian, the story didn't focus on him as the bad guy as much as they normally do. Usually it's Bond and his gadgets and girls and his enemy. This time it was Bond and his emotions and Dominic only had a tenuous link to Vesper that made him feature at all really. Idk, it was a first viewing so, y'know, SQUEE! A rewatch might change my ideas on that.
I REALLY REALLY liked Cam. She was badass but not the way they make some Bond badass!girls - really OTT tough who then immediately fall into bed with James when he turns the charm on. I loved the fact that they didn't sleep together. I loved that she was vulnerable in the fire and he took care of her and she was capable without being unrecognisable as female. Possibly my favourite ever...well, I wouldn't even really call her a 'Bond girl'. She wasn't an appendage to him, she was her own person and I dig that. If the next movie is going to be a follow up to this one, as rumoured, then I hope she'll be back.
James - fuck man. He's perfect. I love him. And while I had reservations about them making the movie about his emotional state, DC pulls it off so well, while still being an absolute machine, that I'm glad they did. He was amazing. And almost unbearably hot. Those freakin' eyes shouldn't be allowed, man.
Anyway. I'm sorry, anytime I get on Bond I can never shut up. I should find a way to do a dissertation on him or something, I love him far too much. AND I LOVE THIS DAMN MOVIE.

Date: 2009-03-25 02:06 am (UTC)(Also, ahahahah. Goldeneye. I saw that the other month, stole their tracking-computer-thing for a Cam!OOM. But, aaah, that movie. I have a Soviet pilot in my head, see, and she just would not. stop. spluttering. through that movie)
And, *nodnods* I see what you are saying about Dominic. It's more...I suppose Bond's more stumbled into someone else's (Cam's?) story, almost? There was this marvellous review, and it said: the players all know what they’re doing, and they’re sure as hell not going to sit around explaining it to each other. I think, thinking about it like that, it could almost that Bond's finding out what is going on, too, while everyone has their connections. It's more about finding out about Quantum rather than Bond vs Villain, and Dominic's a key into understanding Quantum. At least, how I see it when looking at it like that. Normally, I'm seeing everything through Cam's perspective.
Oh, yes. I can't actually see her ever sleeping with Bond. I mean, I wouldn't say never ever, given M'ways, but they are...too similar, almost. Allies. I adored how Bond was looking out for her in the end, but I don't think that translates to sex. At least, certianly not in the context of the movie. And, besides, Cam's view on sex and relationships really isn't the most healthy ever - Dominic wasn't pulling the "She'll only go to bed with you if you give her something" out of thin air. But, I love her. I really do. Hopefully, I'm playing her well, although it's hard with spies - they spend so much time lying and pretending. And, yes - I call her a Bond girl, but that's more in a rough, joking around description for chat than anything else. She's her own person, very, very much. And, well, one of the main producers/folks in charge of the franchise really, really likes Camille, and keeps saying that she wants her to come back, so we shall see!
YES! I thought he was marvellous, and I have no idea what freaking movie those reviewers were watching. And, god, yes, those eyes.
