fightingthecage: (B&W - Bed)

I've been out three times this week. And you know what? Things are no different than when I went out when I was eighteen except for two unavoidable points;

1) There are no men in bars over the age of twenty anymore, and

2) I don't really enjoy clubs any more than I used to.

Man. I feel old. And it's one thing going out and having a laugh with your mates and drinking but if there are no dudes that you look at and want to pull...it's just not quite the same, y'know?

Just things that I've come across recently that I want to witter on about to take my mind off other shit.

Halloween? Not an American thing. Maybe its made a bigger deal of there now and maybe it's been comercialised by the Americans but it was not 'invented' by them. It's a British Celtic Pagan festival that was transported to America in the 19th Century.

It occured to me the other day, when I was busy wasting time, to look up the city near where I grew up on Wikipedia to see if there was anything written about it. And there is. I had no idea about the old Roman history but its pretty awesome. Pity the place is so crap now but...well, actually, I don't know if it is. I drove through it last Friday and they've built all this new stuff, its weird. Apparantly the council are spending another few billion on it to revamp the centre which is awesome, because it needs it. Shame it won't do much for he chav population though.

'Chav' by the way, stands for 'Council Housed Adult Vermin' I discovered three days ago. Isn't that nice? But it is awesome that there is a pub in Gloucester that's been there since 1450. I mean, what? I've been there too and its awesome, it's down a little alley and its in bloody good nick for a building that old.

And this is where I actually grew up. The Royal Forest of Dean. I've always loved the bit about having to be born within the hundred of St. Briavels to be considered a true 'Forester' - this is actually what got me thinking about all this stuff. My mother was telling me about the local hospital (called The Dilke, they looked after my grandmother when she first had her stroke) getting closed down. My mother is/was a nurse and so many people were up in arms about it, they all went on a march in London - and now the place has been saved, for another three years anyway. The point being, there are no true foresters anymore as you had to be born in the Dilke to be within 'the hundred' and the maternity unit was closed down in the 80's sometime. But still. It's the one piece of Forest tradition I like (that, and the free-roaming sheep). Next time I go down - probably in December - I'll take my camera. Whatever I personally think of the place, there's no denying its absolutely beautiful.

And this is where I currently live. That picture of the river? I drive over that every day to go to college. The village I live in is named there too - Galgate. It means 'road to Scotland' apparantly, which is quite nice. I had no idea about all the hangings at the castle though, ew. I suppose its fitting that the castle is now a prison.

And that's all my useless info for the day. Apart from the fact that its around -5 C here tonight and OMG COLD!

ETA: AHAHAHA, and I thought I was done. I should also link to this info on Bonfire Night, as long as I'm being a boring geek. 5th November - Sunday! Fireworks, EEE! I'm so trying to get the evening off work so I can go to a bonfire, I love them. It's all to do with this, the 1605 plot by Guy Fawkes and his buddies to blow up Parliment with James I inside. Early terrorism right there. *nod*

Once again, I am mooching around with little to do. About to start my NaNo thing but...what's better than procrastination? So, have some pics of my house and Housemate Jen's dogs. Apologies for the dodgy light on some, I can't be bothered to edit or adjust settings or, y'know, make any kind of effort today.

It's a nice day here )

I think my digital camcorder takes pictures weirdly - looking at the preview of these pics, everything looks a bit squashed up and small. But its really not, the rooms in this place are pretty big. Meh. And there ya go, my pointless post for the day. Next week I'll develop the film I have of Bertie the spaniel, who's dead now, and I'll have to post pics of how beautiful he was. Man, I miss him.

And now, NaNo!
