Ugh, I just read that the new Harry Potter movie sucks. How depressing.

ETA: For those interested, I read it here.

The review said that it should be called 'Harry Potter and the Hormones' because it's all about teenage stuff and the Half-Blood Prince hardly gets a mention - and Dumbledore's death is mishandled. Also, characters like Bill, Charlie and Fleur have been cut.

Dude, are you seriously listening to anyone on the internet regarding an opinion of anything to do with Harry Potter? Seriously?

Date: 2009-03-12 08:51 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] fightingthecage.livejournal.com
Well, they're reports from two seperate screenings so I'm listening a bit. But I'll go and see it anyway because it's Harry Potter and I've endured the last five being pretty rubbish.

Eh, it's internet-cool to rip on the HP movies, though; movie adaptations of anything, TBH. I figure all that matters is whether or not you enjoy it yourself, and screw whether it's objectively "good".

Well, this is where I saw it. I'm sure I'll like the bits that are good but I'm never happy when movies like this stray too far from the point and cutting Rufus, Bill, Charlie and Fleur doesn't sit well with me. The background characters help make the stories because we care about them...meh. I could rant all day but I'll just have to wait and see like everyone else.

*facepalm* Well, it's really hit-or-miss with those movies.

They've just about all been misses, in my opinion. But I'll go and see it anyway, 'cos its Harry!

I like most of them but only for certain bits. Azkaban was the WORST EVAR with WERE-CHIHUAHUA. Mostly, it's the visuals...but they can really deal out the CRAP when it comes to keeping the story together.

Pleh. :)

I enjoy parts of them too - the people who can act, for example. I have a hell of a problem with the dialouge the main three characters are given - and the way Emma Watson and Daniel Radcliffe deliver it, if I'm honest. Rupert Grint is the most naturally talented of the three of them but he doesn't get used enough and in the last movie, it was like he wasn't even trying.

Exactly. And with the way the three of them are in the books, it just sticks out a mile. I would like the films so much better if they used the relationship of the trio as the anchor for all the rest of it, the way the books do. Then they could make changes to the world around them, and cut characters they haven't got time for, and it wouldn't be such a big deal. But when you cut the trio down to virtually nothing, it just sits all wrong.

Granted, I'll still go watch it.

Me too. I will see it through! But I'll keep reminding myself that I have the books waiting at home to make it alllll better afterwards. :)

Yessss. Booooks. *grabby hands at them*

I'll just watch the films as entertainment value. And bitch about Death By Curtain.

They are definitely entertaining but mostly for the wrong reasons. However! I should clarify the bitchy comment about acting I made above and say that I think Daniel Radcliffe handles the dramatic bits quite well. It's just more normal stuff I have issues with.

I get over them by imagining him naked on stage. It helps.

Date: 2009-03-12 09:11 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] moofoot.livejournal.com
...did you get to see him nekked on stage?

From: [identity profile] fightingthecage.livejournal.com
Lol, not personally! But I heard about it and that's where my imagination takes over - if I'd seen it for real, it wouldn't be half as good.

Haha, I play a version of Sirius somewhere and whenever I try and think of it, I'm met with a resounding chorus of 'DAMMIT HARRY PUT YOUR BLOODY TROUSERS ON' so it's a bit different, in my head. XD

Date: 2009-03-12 09:23 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] fightingthecage.livejournal.com
Lol, at least Sirius is the voice of sense! I should add really, that if I start thinking beyond 'naked body' I start going, he's so young and a bit weedy and...y'know, Harry Potter and then I get put off. But it's nice for the few moments my mind remains unsullied by logic. Tbh, Gary Oldman is more attractive.

It kind of is. But I dont really think that's an excuse to cut characters and especially not fuck up Dumbledore's death. If there's one thing theyt to get right, it's that.

I know things often have to be cut for the movie version of books but with a series like this, I just prefer it to be at least a bit faithful to the original source material. And if the Half-Blood Prince doesn't figure much...

...well OK, we don't find out much about him until the end anyway. But also cutting the memory sequences? I just don't know how that'll work at all.

Meh. I may be bitching for nothing. Will have to wait and see.

From: [personal profile] ceitfianna
I'm going to echo everyone else with I'll see it anyway since all the movies have had decent moments. Also I'm right with you on the Rupert Grint love, Ron's always been my favorite and in the later movies, he just gets better.

This is also the point when I put my movie and book separation or else I start getting snarly about Prisoner and how five minutes to have Remus explain, the Marauders were his dad and friends would have helped so much.

Though I think four worked the best because it was a good focus on the all the teenage stuff and had lots of Hermione and Ron which made me happy.

From: [identity profile] fightingthecage.livejournal.com
I would really love more Herminone and Ron stuff because that was my biggest complaint with the last one; they were hardly in it. But again, I have problems with Emma Watson's acting so in a way, I don't want to see a lot of her. I think she has Herminone's character down but she delivers EVERY line likes it's a STATEMENT of DOOM and it just pisses me off. And Rupert Grint is so good...and so unused. It leaves me feeling annoyed. The films would be a thousand times better if they just got those three in a room and taught them how to act together.

He is, from the first movie, I was like oh yes there's Ron. What's hard is that in the books, a lot of what she says is statements of doom and the writers just paid too much attention to that. Also I never considered Rupert for Will's PB because he's just too much Ron to me.

My ride on the bitter train began early with this movie, so I am disheartened to hear these details. But the previews have looked decent so I haven't totally despaired. However, that is what screenings are for - to fix what they might not have gotten right.

Date: 2009-03-12 10:19 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] fightingthecage.livejournal.com
I thought of that after I'd posted - maybe things will have improved! And then it occurred to me that there were complaints at the secret screening back in September, and now the same sort of complaints six months later. So I'm not going to hold my breath - but as I've said above, there's no way I won't see it. And maybe going in with low expectations will actually help.

It doesn't matter. I WILL GO SEE THIS MOVIE AND ENJOY IT, DAMNIT.

I need my HP fix. It's been far too long.

AND RLY? I'm still bitter that HP got booted to make way for Twilight. So, I feel obligated to enjoy this. Hahahah.

From: [identity profile] fightingthecage.livejournal.com
I will go and see it also! Whether I enjoy it or not...depends on whether its good. But I know there are bound to be at least parts of it that I like.

It got booted for Twilight over there? I think here it was because of Bond, although they said they wanted more time for it or something.

Yeah. Last I heard, HP was supposed to arrive in time for the holidays or something, but Twilight took the slot instead. That had HP delayed until the summer. (And subsequently angered a lot of fans. As if HP wasn't already being compared to Twilight anyway.)

Although - yes, I did hear about them needing more time for it.

I guess I'm just so excited for the prospect of anything Harry Potter that I am currently unshakable in my confidence for it to be good; I'll definitely have a better-formed critical opinion once I've seen it. Haha.
