Ha. So. I sometimes wish I weren't so...what's the word...optimistic? No, that's not it. Maybe 'hopeful' is better. Because its been in the back of my mind for a while that all Universities have to be equal opportunity these days. Even ones like...say, Oxford, for example. And damnit! They bloody are.

I've been telling myself since last June that my desire to go to Oxford is now impossible because you have to live on campus the first year and I can't do that with a kid. So I was going to go to Lancaster and have done with it - it's a top 20 Uni, I can see it from my flat so is obviously very convenient and most importantly, Evie will always be near her dad. So why oh why did I check the Oxford website today to see whether its possible to go there with a young child. Because I can. And now I'm going to have to bloody apply.

'Why?' you may ask me. 'If Lancaster is a good Uni and its convenient for the baby's dad and its right there, why bother going to some elitist place that is two hundred miles away and blahblahblahetc etc.' And I would answer with - it is routinely the #1 University in the country. It's world renowned. There is more prestige involved with being an Oxford graduate, even if there shouldn't be. But most importantly, because I want to know if I can.

Bah. Only thing to do is apply next October and sit the History aptitude test and sweat over the impossible personal statement and submit the essays and go through the interview process and see what happens. If I fail, at least I tried and Lancaster is a good back up. If I get in...huh. Well, I guess I'll deal with that if it happens. I keep reminding myself that Steve only sees Evie once a week anyway and I could totally bring her up to see him on weekends if I'm there. It's not impossible, if a little inconvenient. Who knows what might happen over the next eighteen months anyway? Got to try though, no two ways about it.

And for added 19, I grabbed the nearest book to me to get a random quote to use as a title for this entry and look what it says. 0_o.

In other academic-related news - I got a call from my college today. Apparantly my history teacher was expecting me back in class this week. This made me laugh because I thought I was supposed to be back in history classes in November. No matter though, they know now I'm coming back in just over a week (OMG CAN'T WAIT SQUEE!!1!) and Lyn (history teacher) is desperate to get me back. I must have been the only student to get A's last year, heh. But it's nice to know that she bothered to check up on me and wants me in her class enough to get someone to call and say that she hoped I was OK and asking how the baby was, etc. Bless her!

In non-academic news - Evie has learned to laugh! And I swear, its the cutest thing ever. She has also become aware that she has hands and they're fascinating to her - so now she's trying to reach for the dangling toys when she's in her chair and seems adorably confused when she manages to touch one and it rattles at her. Hee! :D!

Oooh, you're entering the fun stage of bebbe-ness now! I miss Liam's bebbe-laugh. It was the most adorable baby belly-laugh ever. I'm glad I have that on video to enjoy forevar. Heh.

Hee, yes! Everyone says that 3 months+ is all the good stuff because they start becoming more aware etc. Can't wait to see it all! I was just thinking today that I'd have to get my video camera out because SO DAMN CUTE!! :D!

Oh definitely take video. You're going to want to see it again...it's also neat to watch your older kid watch themselves on TV. :)

*snicker* See, that just enables me to get the most embarrassing footage ever so I can humiliate her in front of her friends when she's older. Hee! :D!

*SQUEE* BABYLAUGH! That is insane adorable. *hopes for pictures*

YAY! SCHOOL! What are you studying in history? I know what you mean about Oxford, but most people say that where you go to college doesn't really matter - at least undergrad? However, Oxford > Almost all other schools.

Good luck!!! 18 months is a LONG time.

Hell! I have some pictures of her grinning and completely forgot that I was supposed to upload them. I'll do that as soon as I finish my latest film and do them all together. :D

Can't remember what I'm supposed to be studying in history, heh. It might be American history this module but...could just as easily not be. *is dumb* And..well yeah. People say that here too except when it comes to Oxford or Cambridge. Anywhere's fine unless you get the opportunity to go to the top two. If you do, you go there. No discussion.

Thank you! I'm sure it'll all work out for the best in the end. :)

It is completely understandable, after all...it's Oxford.

What more needs to be said?

Heh, yeah. That's kind of how I see it. The only sticking point is the baby's father but who knows what might happen with him over the next eighteen months. Either way, I'm going to apply and see what happens. :)

Absolutely, if you can apply. If you don't get in you don't have to worry about it but if you do, Wow, I am sure that it can be worked out because as I said...Oxford.

Y'see, the whole Oxford/Cambridge thing baffles me. It's probably because I know I could never, ever get in, but I've never had any desire to go there, or shown any interest to those people who go.

I think it's because the people I know who go to Oxfords are muppets, and they say it in that wankerish, elitist way. Y'know 'Oh, I study [Insert course]. At Oxford. *long pause waiting for you to praise them*'...I just don't know what to say to them...

But seriously though, if you can get in, go for it! Everything else will sort itself out.

Yay, laughing stage. I remember when Alex started laughing, it was when the 24 game came out, and I was playing it all day and then my sis came in to show me. I just stopped and looked at him. So darn cute.

And I just re-read my comment. That sounded like the most patronising bag of wank I've ever written.

I didn't mean it as arsey as it sounds...sorry, I've got deadlines flying at me.

*snorfle* I didn't read is as patronising, dont worry. I wa actually going to agree that those sorts of people are muppets (especially if they say they 'study' say, English, there - at Oxford or Cambridge you don't 'study' a subject, you 'read' it. Heh, how's that for patronising? :D) and I hope I would never do that, were I get in. I dont think I would. Hopefully I've outgrown that typ of wank. ;p

Ha, I keep meaning to come back and comment on this: the people who say 'I'm reading such and such' are absolute twats, so please don't do that, Write! Resist the urge! It's study or do. Tutors and DoSs are allowed to say 'read', no one else is. And apply to Cambridge, it is farfar better and less up its own arse. And, to be really, really pretentious, it isn't 'campus' - neither Oxford nor Cambridge have campuses. :D

Lalalalala, I comment a month late.

Lord, if you dont say 'campus' do you have to refer to which college you belong to every time? *snicker* I almost feel obliged to apply to Oxford if its more up its own arse, just so I can have more fodder to take the piss with.

From reading your posts, Cambridge does seem pretty awesome though. I dunno, I suppose I've always seen it as more liberal or something. I'm a bit of a sucker for the Establishment, though I dont know why because if I meet anyone who thinks they're superior for being posh, I make it my mission to puncture a few holes in them.

The other reason I would choose Oxford is because its closer to both the Babydaddy and my mother, for babysitting purposes. I'm keeping options open though, so maybe!

Yus, unless you're talking to an outsider. Which college admitted you is a far more important piece of information than where you live. I'm more a Girtonian than a Cantabrigian. Joys of the collegiate system - it really isn't comparable to the way other unis work.

Also, OXFORD SUCKS. Good luck with applying, though. :)
