Felt like I imagine a tremor would. The floor was moving - which felt very weird. but we're not really supposed to get anything like that in this country. Tremors happen only as freak occurences. It is very windy out but not that bad. Not enough to make a whole flat (in a terraced house) move.

Fun. I was in an earthquake in Italy once, and it took me forever to figure out what was going on because I didn't know what terremoto meant.

Everything's fine! The epicentre was a good few hundred miles away from me, on the the other coast. Can't imagine what it must have felt like there though!

Weeeeeird!

We got an earthquake once that was very small and a significant number of miles North of where I live. I did not, in fact, feel anything move -- but even though we couldn't feel anything physically, the effects of the tremors woke me and my girlfriend up (we were sleeping in the basement), and we could hear a fuckton of birds screeching outside. I recall we sat there for about 20 minutes wondering what the fuck we were doing awake at 5 a.m., and curled back up and went to sleep. Didn't know there'd been an earthquake until the next day.

It was really odd. My first thought was, 'wow, that feels like an earthquake,' and then I reminded myself that they rarely happen in this country so it couldn't have been. And then I failed to come up with anything else that could feasibly have caused it so I was sitting there in a big 'ol state of wtf.

It's quite a relief to find out what it was, actually.

I've always wondered what one of those is actually like. The one that happened near us was TINY. I think I heard on the news not many people in the place it happened even realized what it was. I think it woke us up because even shifts that minor are just SO rare around here, there's some part of the ol' body/brain that can tell when things ain't right. Me, I seem to be sensitive to stuff like that -- I can feel when a weather front causes the barometric pressure to shift, and I'd know it was a full or new moon if I'd been kept in a basement without a clock or a window for a month.

Related: Have you ever read "Job" by Robert Heinlein? There are descriptions of earthquakes in there that are the best I've ever gotten to what it's like to actually be in one.

It must have been pretty small where I was. It was 5.3 on the scale but the epicentre was a couple of hundred miles away from me. I presume they get smaller the further away you are from the centre - it was still enough to make the floor shake and the computer wobble on its (very sturdy) table. Was a very odd feeling.

Never read it! Sounds prety good. I've always wondered what it would feel like to be in a huge one - though I imagine you'd really just be fairly terrified and dodging falling buildings and whatnot, so p'raps not.
